My action plan for this week

Action Plan

To get this brief started, yesterday Heather and I arranged to meet up and get a timetable and action plan drawn out. After discussing when was best to work collaboratively and individually, Heather, being the 'organizer' for this project has drawn out a colour coded time table of the month.

Rationale and Concept statement

Brief title: Make Feel Good drinks famous.

What is the problem?
1. Need new customers
2. Don't know what we're about
3. Not appealing to our target audience
4.
5.

We intend to promote to a group of energetic, health-consious 16-34 year old adults that Feel Good drinks are full of natural, tasty, fruitiness.

In order to achieve this we will produce a print based publication that will catch the eye of our target audience by making them smile/feel good.

This will be produced by using:
Lithography - for mass production
Screen printing?

Chosen brief - Feel Good Drinks.

The Brief
A fun and exciting way to make Feel Good drinks famous.

Concept/Proposition
People don't know what they're about
Want new customers
Not appealing to their target audience

Target Audience
16-34 year old adults
Health-consious
Energetic, want to 'live life to the full'
Prepared to spend that bit extra

Tone of Voice
Friendly, fun and a little cheeky
Have that 'feel good' factor that makes people smile

Considerations
- Media and format
- Where are people going to see it?
- How will it 'spread the word'?
- Needs to make people smile
- Need to have fun with it

Identify 3 briefs

The briefs for the collaborative brief will be taken from the YCN website. I have looked through the website and have selected...
  • the H.Samuel brief as one I would really like to work on independently. Create a campaign which challenges the perception of H. Samuel...target audience young people (around my age) tone of voice friendly, approachable and magical. Apply to three types of media, one used in store. I think this would be a good opportunity to develop my image and layout skills and maybe my new after effects skills too.

  • Feel good drinks brief for collaborative practice. I think this one would be a fun and interesting project for me a Heather to do. I also liked the Ted Baker one.

  • finally the 'Google' brief 'educate users about web browsers', is one that i don't want to do (first year flash back - 'how to create and email mailing list')

Collabrative Partner

Why have you chosen to work with your creative partner? What are your aims?
I have tried to chose a partner who...
  • has effective management skills.
  • Is organized
  • is decisive, because I'm not.
  • has an interest and skills in print.
  • enjoys using image/illustration as this as one of my main areas of interest.
  • enjoys type and layout.
I chose Heather because her poster looked impressive. She had taken her time to consider the layout and hand draw her type to demonstrate her skills as a graphic designer. Reading her poster, she described herself as a reliable, organized person who has skills in layout, typography and print. These were the sort of skills and qualities I was looking for in a partner. She was also wanting to develop her print and hand craft skills through the brief and enjoys working with image, same as me. She was looking for someone who was reliable and committed to the project and who has skills in layout, print, image, illustrative and software. I think i fit the bill, so we agree to collaborate.

What specific areas of creative interest/ focus do you want to explore during this brief.
  • gain and improve print process skills
  • gain and improve illustration skills
  • gain and improve skills in computer softwear (illustrator/photoshop)
  • Develop communication and working collaboratively.
  • Improve my research skills as this has be a weakness of mine in previous projects and i want to improve.
what specific design skills do you have to offer? How do you intend to use them?
Illustration skills (hand drawing), colour, layout, typography, good understanding and application of design software such as illustrator, photoshop, After Effects, animation.

what specific non-design skills do you have to offer? How do you intend to use them?
work hard under pressure and stress, very committed to project and completion, easy going, have critical awareness of on going development, good attendance, normally good time management.

What do you see your roles being in the creative partnership?
I think it depends on the sort of designer I intend to work with. Share main decisions and use each others strengths.

What do you see your individual responsibilities being in the creative partnership?
Half of the research, Idea generating, development etc
I will use any of my skills when needed
Speaking in presentations and presenting work
keeping blog upto date
layout colour
make sure my collaborative partner is happy with what we are both doing

What will your joint responsibilities be?
  • deciding on which project to do
  • gathering research
  • Idea generating
  • development of work
  • production of final pieces
  • printing costs
  • presentations
  • Turning up on time and being prepared

Collabrative Brief - YCN

After being briefed on the new module this morning the group got started on the YCN collaborative brief.
Part 1. We needed to select a suitable, creative partner each. To do this we all had two hours to produce 2 posters, one advertising ourselves as a graphic designer, the other stating qualities we were looking for in a collaborative graphic design partner. These two were mine...
I chose to display this poster to advertise myself as a designer. My most resent and up to date piece of design was for the DVD case so i have taken this layout and applied it to the poster. It was a bit of a rush, but if i was to produce it again i would probably use a different colour scheme.

A Professional Practice

This brief is part of the new Module 'Design Practice 2'.
Through this module I hope to identify and develop my own design identity within the context of contemporary graphic design practice.
In a professional context my individuality and effectiveness as designer will be based on my skills and how they are applied.
This brief is split into two parts. The first is a collaborative brief, working in a team of two. I am looking forward to this as I will hopefully learn a lot of new skills from my partner and produce a better response to the brief then if I were to do it independently.
The second part is the similar to the first however I will work independently and will investigate my own practical, conceptual and creative concerns.

I intend to support each brief with rationals and evaluations. Final resolutions will be presented and displayed appropriate to the brief.

Along with documenting everything onto my blog, I will also be producing a project file (A4)to document as evidence my project management skills, time tables, statements of intent etc.

Self-Evaluation end of Module

1. what skills have i developed through this module and how effectively do i think i have applied them?
During this module I have learnt new skills with in the field of design for digital media. Starting with storyboarding i learnt how to draw and visualise a sequence into frames. Which could then be organised and edited before developing onto screen. I have enjoyed this process and some of the storyboards have been key to the development and production of final animated sequences.
To develop moving image on screen, I learnt how to use 'After Effects', a software which I now feel confident to use and create a moving sequence in. It also enabled me to produced the final 5 idents for a 'season of films' brief.
To complete the 'design for interactive digital media' brief, I produced an interactive dvd. For this I learnt how to use 'dvd studio pro' I found this difficult to pick up initially but now after, trial, error and completion of disc I feel confidant with the basics.

2. What approaches tools/methods of research have you developed and how have they informed your development process?
The Internet, youtube and use of blog have been the main sources of research for this brief. I have also found crits and discussion with members of the group to be very helpful with decision making and design focus. Lectures from tutors have been informative and taught me new skills and the application of them. I have kept notes from these sessions for future work.

3) What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalize on these?
I have successfully adapted my working practice to apply to digital screen. In order to do this I learnt how to use new software such as After Effects and DVD studio Pro. I have also developed and improved my skills in Illustrator, photoshop and hand drawing, which I think reflects in improved quality of work. In order for me to produce and burn the DVD on time I had to organise everything into appropriate files this has improved my organisation and time management.

4) What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these more fully?
I should have gathered more research in order to generate a larger range of ideas and concepts. As I was unfamiliar with producing a DVD and using DVD studio Pro I should not have left this production to the final week before submission. As a result I felt very restricted with what I could produce and I think this reflects in the poor quality of work produced.
Looking through my context blog now, it is lacking in evaluations, analysis and opinions. I will post more often next time. Also I need to improve my organisation so i don't lose vital development work form the start of module (storyboards/test pieces).

5. Identify five things you will do differently next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?
1) discuss and interact more with peers and tutors as they can provide alternative opinions and ways for me to improve my work.
2) Use the studio more, this would help with the above (1)
3) Do more research! this will provide a larger amount of material to generate ideas/solutions to the briefs.
4) Keep blog upto date and post more often with evaluations and my opinions. To help the development of work.
5) Make clear decisions and stick to them.

How would I grade myself in the following areas
5(excellent) 4(very good) 3(good) 2 (average) 1 (poor)
Attendance 5
Punctuality 4
Motivation 4
Commitment 5
Quantity of work produced 2
Quality of work produced 3
Contribution to the group 3

Rationale

Mystery movie season
Developed from Mystery novels, Mystery movies used to be very popular through out the 1930's-1980's. Since then they are much less frequent in cinemas and also less popular.
The idenets i have produced are intended to promote and advertise a season of Mystery movies.
Through research I found there is a large variety of mystery movies, ranging from, Horror, comedy and period. However all included the same element of suspense and suspicion. This set the tone for all my idents and a concept was generated. I selected specific scenes from mystery movies which i thought created this tone well and developed them to advertise the Film 4 mystery season.
The target audience was anyone who would enjoy watching mystery movies and just needed reminding of the genre. Also viewers of the film 4 channel who may not have seen a mystery movie before and the ident would advertise and provide them with a good scense of what the movies are like.
I chose to hold the mystery movie season on the film 4 channel because it is well know for showing good a broad range of quality movies. It also has viewers who i think would enjoy watching mystery movies.
Starting by viewing the mystery movies and picking scense which i thought created the tone to include in my idents. I draw a range of Story boards and attempted to develop the idents from there. Due to time management this was unsuccessful and was put on hold.
The successful alternative solution came from the movie posters, which provided a large amount of the development in this project. From the new storyboards the Idents where then vectorized, this provided a new visual quality of simple silhouettes. This also helped with the animating of objects.
As all the idents were created in this vector style, I think in this visual way they do all work successfully as a set. Including the 'mystery movie logo' and film 4 logo all so helped with the set connection. I think the combination of narrative, tone, visuals and sound work well at portraying what a mystery movie is like and engages the target audience.

Final DVD design

This is how the DVD packaging is supposed to look, however on the final product the colours did not print out the same. I probably should have used a better quality printer or adjust the settings to improve the print quality.

The above, is the image I intend to have mounted onto the DVD disc. I have kept the design simple and very similar to the front cover design so it is clear which dvd case it belongs to. I have added an orange-yellow outer glow to the lamp as well for a bit of added light effect.
